Jeff Brennan, Rotary Club of Mill Creek’s International Committee Chair, announced a $500.00 donation to a literacy project in Ethiopia which is being sponsored through the Peace Corps by Bryan Cramer a former student of Arch Bishop Murphy High School.

Many students in Ethiopia will never read a book outside their school textbooks. Reading for pleasure or to research a topic of personal interest is rare. The inability to read at an adequate level severely affects a child's success in school- over half of all adults in Ethiopia have not received any schooling and fewer than five percent have a high school diploma. Current library facilities are sorely inadequate to reverse these trends; most libraries are private and consist mainly of outdated English textbooks.

In order to encourage healthy educational habits and curiosity for learning, the PCV has teamed up with a local library and literacy development project to establish a library in this Ethiopian town. This local Library and Literacy Project has already set up over forty libraries in Ethiopia. This proposed library project is planned to be dedicated this October 2011.
